Amanda Watsham Finishes her Solo Album at Jazzmouse
Mandy Watsham Dunstall has just finished recording her new album at Jazzmouse Studios. Entitled ‘Nightingales and Rainbows’, it is Mandy’s first solo album, although she likes to think of it as more of a duet album alongside her pianist and arranger husband Clive Dunstall.
Mandy has worked in the world of Opera for various companies including The Royal Opera House and The West End for a number of years performing roles such as Queen of the Night – Magic Flute, Carlotta - Phantom of the Opera, and Hanna Glavari in The Merry Widow. The songs and styles used on the album are varied and reflect something of the wide range of material that Mandy performs, from Opera to Musical Theatre to more contemporary work. There is a great flexibility in her voice which is well demonstrated here and shown particularly in a new song written by her husband (who is predominantly a Jazz musician), entitled AJ’s Swinging ‘Lib’, which cleverly merges the two worlds of Opera and Jazz in one humorous number! An eclectic mix which includes a new translation of The Queen of the Nights Act II aria from Mozart’s Magic Flute, Dvorak’s Song to the Moon, to Musical Theatre numbers encompassing Phantom, Brigadoon and Yentl, with some modern and original compositions also! There are some beautiful arrangements of classic pieces; none more so than ‘If I loved you’ from Rogers and Hammerstein’s ‘Carousel’, worked beautifully alongside Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Recorded at Jazz Mouse Studios in Colnbrook and engineered/produced (plus reeds, percussion, drum programming and numerous tea and sandwiches!) by Paul Fawcus this is a unique recording project and will be on sale in a few months time.
